Stanley Park

Stanley Park is a large coastal park beside downtown Vancouver, with forest trails, beaches, gardens and waterfront paths.

Stanley Park is a large coastal park beside downtown Vancouver, with forest trails, beaches, gardens and waterfront paths. The Seawall circles the park’s edge, giving walkers and cyclists views of the ocean, mountains and city skyline. Inland, trails pass through dense coastal forest and around Beaver Lake and Lost Lagoon. Brockton Point’s carved totem poles, Prospect Point Lookout and the Vancouver Aquarium add distinct stops to a visit. Choose a short waterfront walk or set aside much of the day to explore the park’s trails and attractions.

The Seawall and the waterfront

The Seawall follows the edge of Stanley Park, with paved routes for walking and cycling. Its views shift between the city skyline, the ocean and the mountains. You can walk or ride a section and turn back, or follow the route around the park. The full circuit takes about two hours by bike or three on foot, so allow more time if you want to stop along the way.

The path has separate space for cyclists and pedestrians in places. If you choose to cycle, follow the one-way direction on the Seawall. Walkers can take a slower pace and pause at viewpoints, beaches and landmarks. The park is large, and a full day can accommodate more of its trails and attractions.

Trails, lakes and coastal forest

Away from the waterfront, trails run through dense coastal forest, with towering trees, ferns and undergrowth. The park’s Inner Loop includes quiet stretches near Beaver Lake, where you can take a break from the busier paths. Lost Lagoon is another waterside stop, with ducks and other wildlife around the water.

There are open grassy areas, picnic spots and benches as well as wooded trails. Pack water before setting off to explore different parts of the park. If you want to fit in the aquarium, gardens or other attractions, leave more time than you would for a walk around the Seawall alone.

Totem poles and cultural context

Carved totem poles at Brockton Point are among the park’s best-known cultural landmarks. Stanley Park lies on the traditional, unceded territories of the Musqueam, Squamish and Tsleil-Waututh peoples. The peninsula was also home to First Nations villages, including Xwayxway. Take time to view the poles respectfully and consider a First Nations-led tour to learn more about the place and its history.

More stops around the park

The Vancouver Aquarium is inside Stanley Park and focuses on education, research and conservation. Its marine animals include sea otters, penguins, sea lions, fish, jellyfish, sea turtles, birds and reptiles. The aquarium is a separate stop, so add time if you plan to visit.

Beaches, gardens and landmarks offer other ways to break up a walk or ride. Prospect Point Lookout is a useful place to pause for views of Lions Gate Bridge and West Vancouver. The park also has playgrounds, picnic facilities and trails suited to families. You can rent a bike or boat to explore further, or keep to a walk and take time at the waterfront and forest stops.
