Jean-Paul-Riopelle Place is a small park in Montréal’s Quartier international, beside the Palais des Congrès.

Jean-Paul-Riopelle Place is a small park in Montréal’s Quartier international, beside the Palais des Congrès. Its main draw is La Joute, a sculpture and fountain by Jean-Paul Riopelle, with changing water jets and a ring of fire that lights over the water on summer evenings. Benches and shade make it a calm place to pause, and squirrels and birds add life to the grounds. Look for the statues and the colourful lights in the trees after dark. The park is also a place to rest between city walks.

At the north end of the park, a basin surrounds La Joute, the central work by Jean-Paul Riopelle. The fountain’s water jets change, and on summer evenings a ring of fire appears on the water’s surface.

The sculpture was first installed at Montréal’s Olympic Stadium in 1976. It moved to its current location in 2004.

The park sits between avenue Viger to the north and rue Saint-Antoine to the south. The Palais des Congrès is to the east, with Centre CDP Capital to the west.

Benches and shaded spots make it a place to sit after walking through the city. Statues, birds and squirrels add details to notice as you pause. Multicoloured lights in the trees give the park a different look at night.
