The Military Museums is a complex of eight museums and galleries on Crowchild Trail in southwest Calgary, covering Canada’s army, navy and air force, as well as four Calgary regiments. Walk through a First World War trench, explore displays of aircraft and armoured vehicles, and follow the history of military service through objects, detailed panels and lifelike scenes. Eight museums in one complex

The Military Museums

At 4520 Crowchild Trail SW, The Military Museums brings several collections together in one place. The complex covers Canada’s army, navy and air force, includes the Air Force Cold War Museum, and has four museums devoted to Calgary regiments: Princess Patricia’s Canadian Light Infantry, Lord Strathcona’s Horse, The King’s Own Calgary Regiment and The Calgary Highlanders.

The collections are arranged around branches of service and individual regiments. That structure lets you follow distinct histories through their own displays and detailed panels. The complex also includes the Founders’ Gallery and a library and archives. The gallery presents art and heritage exhibitions that explore conflict through the work of local and international artists.

Trenches, aircraft and military objects

Displays include a recreated First World War trench, where you can get a sense of the cramped conditions soldiers faced. Other exhibits trace the experience of military service through uniforms, weapons and equipment, with lifelike scenes that place figures and objects in wartime settings. A ship’s wheelhouse gives another perspective on service at sea.

Aircraft and armoured vehicles are among the large objects on display, including fighter planes and tanks. The Cold War Hangar focuses on aircraft from that period. The site also has an outdoor display area, so look beyond the indoor galleries as you make your way around. Collections and exhibits can change, and some sections may be temporarily empty during exhibit updates.

Talks and hands-on activities

Volunteer talks and tours add personal accounts to the objects on display. Some volunteers are veterans who share their experiences and knowledge of particular aircraft or regimental histories. Saturday is a useful day to visit if you hope to catch a conversation with volunteers, though talks are not guaranteed.

Activities for children have included camo face painting, dog tag making and opportunities to try on military clothing or equipment for photos. Family Day events have also included weapons-handling and black powder rifle demonstrations. These activities are event-specific, so check what is scheduled before planning a visit around them.

The scale of the complex makes time the main planning consideration. Three hours is a reasonable minimum for a substantial visit, and people interested in exploring each collection in depth may want longer. If you have a particular interest, such as the Cold War aircraft or a Calgary regiment, allow time to find its dedicated displays rather than trying to rush through every gallery.
