Its collections cover archaeology and art from Belgium and many other parts of the world, including ancient Egypt, Mesopotamia, Greece, China, India, Southeast Asia and the Americas. The range extends from prehistoric objects to European applied arts and Belgian Art Nouveau.

Among the objects and displays are Egyptian mummies and sarcophagi, prehistoric flints, Roman history exhibits, Syrian mosaics, Asian Buddhas and a large statue from Easter Island. Medieval stone carvings and tapestries offer a change of scale and material, while the museum’s decorative arts include furniture, metalwork, wood carvings and glass. There is also a collection of early astronomical instruments.

The galleries cover a broad span of history and geography, so a focused visit is easier to plan than trying to see everything. Pick a few collections in advance, then leave time to explore nearby rooms if something catches your attention. Visitors have reported finding galleries that were not marked on their map, so the plan may not capture every display.

Most exhibition labels are in French and Dutch, and English explanations are not available throughout. An English audioguide is one option for adding context. The museum also has an English booklet describing what is on each level, though it does not replace English labels beside every object.

The museum is in Cinquantenaire Park at Parc du Cinquantenaire 10. Its extensive collections can fill several hours, and some visitors spend longer while still skipping sections. Allow enough time for your chosen galleries rather than treating it as a quick stop.
