Victoria State Rose Garden is a free public garden at Werribee Park in Werribee South, with more than 5,000 roses arranged in the shape of a five-petalled Tudor rose. Hybrid tea and floribunda roses grow among the formal beds, where name plates help you identify the collection. The flowers are at their fullest from about November to April, and spring is a particularly colourful time to visit. Come for a gentle walk, close-up photos or a shaded picnic, then add nearby Werribee Mansion if you have more time.

The Tudor rose design

The garden’s beds form a five-petalled Tudor rose. More than 5,000 roses fill the design, including hybrid tea and floribunda varieties. The formal layout gives you a clear route to wander, while the name plates offer a way to explore the different beds at your own pace.

The garden opened in 1986. It received the International Garden of Excellence award from the World Federation of Rose Societies in 2003, becoming the first rose garden outside Europe to receive the award. More than a hundred volunteers care for the collection.

When the roses bloom

The main flowering season runs roughly from November to April. Spring is often a particularly rewarding time for colour and fragrance, although blooms can appear outside the peak season. The garden can feel less vivid when the roses are not flowering, so check current bloom conditions before making a special trip.

Take time to read the bed labels rather than walking straight through. They help you notice the variety in the collection, and the roses make close-up subjects for photographs.

A stop at Werribee Park

The rose garden is part of the Werribee Park precinct, beside Werribee Mansion. You can keep the visit focused on the flowers or combine it with time at the mansion and the surrounding grounds. Lakes, a café and trees where large numbers of bats gather are also mentioned among the nearby sights.

The garden suits a relaxed walk, a shaded picnic or a quiet break with a book. Families can use the lawns when space is available, though the garden itself is a modest-sized stop and its facilities are basic. Entry is free, and parking is available. Public toilets are a short walk away.
