Milk Beach sits at the base of Hermit Bay in Vaucluse, within Sydney Harbour National Park. The stretch of sand is small, with heritage-listed Strickland House above it. Its sheltered position brings calm water, and the harbour view looks towards the city skyline, Harbour Bridge and Opera House. Shark Island is also part of the outlook.

The beach’s name recalls the area’s dairy-farming past. In the 1800s, boats carried fresh milk from farms along the harbour into the city. This small beach was one of the places where the milk was unloaded.

Swimming, snorkelling and a harbour walk

The gentle harbour water makes Milk Beach a place for a swim, and the clear shallows and rocks by the shore suit snorkelling. Fishing is another option. Above the beach, a grassy area gives you room to sit with food and look out over the water. There are no cafes or shower facilities on the beach, so bring what you need for your visit.

Milk Beach is also a stop on the Hermitage Foreshore Walk, which follows the coast between Rose Bay and Nielsen Park. You can reach the beach from either direction, with the route passing other small coves and offering views across the harbour. Strickland House is just above the sand and is another point of interest along the way.

Planning your visit

Access is on foot along the foreshore track; the beach does not have a direct road connection. Nearby street parking is limited, so plan for a walk or consider public transport. The route down to the beach can be a workout, according to accounts of the approach, and the beach’s small size means space is limited when it is busy.

Take care walking barefoot, as glass has been reported on the sand. Bring drinking water and a picnic, and allow time to enjoy the outlook rather than relying on facilities at the beach. For a longer outing, continue along the Hermitage Foreshore Walk towards Rose Bay or Nielsen Park.
