Flagstaff Gardens is Melbourne’s oldest public park, established in 1862 on the western edge of the CBD, across from Queen Victoria Market. Mature eucalypts, Moreton Bay figs and elm avenues shade its paths and lawns, while seasonal flowerbeds and a rose garden add colour. Come for a quiet walk, a picnic or a pause between city stops. In spring, cherry blossoms bring another reason to wander through the grounds. The park also has a playground, tennis court, public toilets and barbecue facilities.

A park with an early place in Melbourne’s history

Flagstaff Gardens was established as public gardens in 1862 and is recognised as a heritage site. The hill was once known as Burial Hill and served as Melbourne’s first cemetery; eight early settlers were buried there. The grounds later became a public green space on the western side of the city centre.

The park occupies one of central Melbourne’s higher points. Its outlook has changed as the city grew: views that once reached Port Phillip Bay are now framed by city buildings. From the western corner, visitors can look towards the city skyline and Docklands.

Trees, gardens and facilities

The grounds combine open lawns with established trees, including eucalypts, Moreton Bay figs and avenues of elm. Flowerbeds change with the seasons, and the rose garden gives the paths another focus. Benches and broad, even paths make it easy to pause or take a gentle walk. Spring cherry blossoms provide a seasonal reason to visit, with mid-September to mid-October given as the viewing period.

Families can use the playground, and the park also has a tennis court, public toilets, picnic tables and barbecue facilities. Dogs are allowed. The gardens sit opposite Queen Victoria Market, so market food can be brought over for a picnic; seagulls may gather around outdoor meals.

Getting there and choosing a time

Flagstaff Station is the closest station, and trams along La Trobe and William streets provide another way to reach the park. It is open 24 hours. The central location makes it convenient for a walk between city stops, though the lawns and paths can be busier around lunchtime.

For a calmer visit, aim for early morning or late afternoon. The park is also used for sunset walks, and the western corner is noted for city views. A lap around the perimeter is about one kilometre, making it a useful option when you want a straightforward walk without leaving the CBD.
