Boggo Road Gaol, at 21 Boggo Road in Dutton Park, is a former prison and heritage site where guided tours trace Queensland’s penal history.

Boggo Road Gaol, at 21 Boggo Road in Dutton Park, is a former prison and heritage site where guided tours trace Queensland’s penal history. The red-brick walls and guard tower set the scene for accounts of prison life, staff and inmates including Slim Halliday and Patrick Kenniff. Choose a history tour for the site’s past or a ghost tour for a darker evening visit. The gaol has wheelchair access through most areas, though some upstairs sections are inaccessible.

A prison with a long history

Boggo Road Gaol

Boggo Road Gaol began as Brisbane Gaol in 1883 and was officially known as the Brisbane Prison. The name Boggo Road came from the road leading to the gaol, which could become a boggy quagmire after rain. For 109 years, the prison was a prominent part of Brisbane’s skyline.

A women’s gaol was added in 1903. It was among the first gaols designed and built specifically for women. The site later held prisoners serving the longest sentences, including people serving life sentences. Today, Boggo Road Gaol is Queensland’s only remaining intact prison that reflects 19th-century principles of prison design.

What the guided tours cover

Tours focus on the people and daily life behind the prison walls. Guides explain inmates’ crimes, their routines and the work of the officers who ran the gaol. Stories include Slim Halliday, known as the “Houdini of Boggo Road Gaol,” and Patrick Kenniff, described as Australia’s last bushranger.

The prison’s red-brick walls, large doors and guard tower give the site a stark appearance. Guided visits connect these physical details with the gaol’s role in Queensland’s penal history. Different tour options are available, including tours for a range of ages, as well as ghost tours and events.

Choosing a tour and planning access

A history tour is a practical choice if you want to learn about the inmates, officers and prison life. Ghost tours take place at night and bring a more atmospheric focus to the site’s past. A Halloween Ghost tour is also mentioned as a spooky, informative option.

Tour routes may not cover every part of the former prison. Kitchens, workshops and the infirmary are among the areas to ask about if you want a fuller look at the complex. Most of the gaol is accessible to wheelchair users, but some upstairs sections are not, so check the route when planning your visit. Booking tickets in advance is recommended.
