Floralis Generica

Floralis Genérica is a large steel-and-aluminum flower in Plaza de las Naciones Unidas, in Buenos Aires’s Recoleta area.

Floralis Genérica is a large steel-and-aluminum flower in Plaza de las Naciones Unidas, in Buenos Aires’s Recoleta area. Argentine architect Eduardo Catalano gave the sculpture to the city in 2002. Its six petals rise above a reflecting pool, where the metal catches the light. The mechanism that once moved the petals is currently being repaired, but the scale and design still make it a worthwhile stop. Walk through the surrounding green space, take photos from different angles, or link the visit with nearby Recoleta sights.

Floralis Generica

Floralis Genérica stands in Plaza de las Naciones Unidas in the Recoleta area of Buenos Aires. Argentine architect Eduardo Catalano designed the sculpture and donated it to the city in 2002. Its flower form is built from metal, with six broad petals rising above a pool that reflects the sculpture.

The work’s name refers to flowers in general. Catalano intended it to represent flowers as a whole, rather than a particular species. Its large scale and reflective surfaces give it a strong presence in the open plaza.

The petals and their mechanism

The sculpture was designed to move: a hydraulic system and photoelectric cells controlled the petals, which were meant to open in daylight and close at sunset. The mechanism is currently under repair, so the petals are not moving. You can still see how the metal sections and their joints form the flower’s structure, and how the surface changes with the light.

The pool provides another angle on the sculpture, especially when its reflection is visible. Walk around the plaza to view the flower from different sides rather than staying only at the closest point.

A stop in Recoleta

The sculpture sits in a green public space, with gardens and nearby parks that make it easy to include in a longer walk. The area is also close to the National Museum of Fine Arts and the University of Buenos Aires Law School. You can pair the visit with those nearby sights or continue on a route through Recoleta.

Allow about 30 minutes to look around and take photos. Weekdays are a quieter option; the plaza is livelier on weekends. Since the petals are not operating during repairs, focus your visit on the scale, construction and setting rather than waiting for the flower to open.
