Pyramid of Tirana

The Pyramid of Tirana is a concrete landmark in the middle of the Albanian capital.

The Pyramid of Tirana is a concrete landmark in the middle of the Albanian capital. It was completed in 1988 as a museum to Enver Hoxha and has since been renovated into a youth technology and culture centre. Its sloping sides can be walked, and a long flight of steps leads to a platform with views over the city and the mountains beyond. There is no entry fee, and the site is open around the clock. Combine the climb with a stop at the cafés around its base.

Built as a museum to Enver Hoxha

The pyramid opened in 1988 as the Enver Hoxha Museum. Hoxha had led Albania from 1944 until his death in 1985, and the building was meant to present his legacy to the public. Its designers were his daughter, Pranvera Hoxha, and her husband, Klement Kolaneci.

The design follows the brutalist style of the period, with a large concrete form, a sloping pyramid shape and a broad platform of stairs in front. The project was planned quickly, in about two years, so that it could open around the 80th anniversary of Hoxha's birth.

From the 1990s to closure

After communism ended in 1991, the museum closed and the building found other uses. It served as a conference centre and an exhibition venue, and at different times it housed a radio station, a nightclub and the headquarters of a television channel. During the Kosovo War in 1999, NATO used it as a temporary base.

By 2001 the building had been closed completely. Over the following decades it was left in poor condition, and it became covered in graffiti. For a long time, its future was a matter of public debate, including whether it should be demolished or restored.

The renovation and TUMO

Renovation began in 2021 under the direction of the architecture firm MVRDV. The work kept the concrete shell and added green space, new stairs on the sloping façade, and a network of cafés, studios, workshops, classrooms and offices for start-ups. The renovated complex reopened in 2023 and is now home to TUMO Tirana.

TUMO is a free learning centre for young people aged 12 to 18. Courses cover animation, graphic design, filmmaking, robotics, music and programming. A children's space, Micro-Folie, also operates inside the complex. It was set up by the Municipality of Tirana with the French Embassy and several cultural partners, and it combines technology, art and creative activities.

Outside, colourful boxes are placed across the park, forming a public space that people can use for sitting, playing and meeting.

How a visit works

Entry to the pyramid is free, and no tickets are needed. The main activity is the climb: a long flight of steps leads to a platform with views over the city and the mountains beyond. The steps are steep, and in direct sun the climb is tiring. One route is to take the lift to the top and walk down the stairs.

The site has a wheelchair-accessible entrance and an accessible parking area, and a paid car park is on site. Restaurants and coffee shops are located around the outside, and there are social spaces and a hotel in the same area. Sunset is a popular time to go, and the building is lit up at night.

Getting there

The pyramid stands in central Tirana on Bulevardi Dëshmorët e Kombit. From Skanderbeg Square, walk south along the boulevard. The avenue is lined with bars and restaurants, and it passes Park Rinia before the pyramid appears on the left. The site is easy to reach on foot, by taxi or by public transport.
