Chilnualna Falls

Chilnualna Falls is a series of cascades above Wawona in Yosemite National Park’s southern section.

Chilnualna Falls is a series of cascades above Wawona in Yosemite National Park’s southern section. The lower falls are reached on a short walk of about half a mile round trip, while the full trail climbs through forested switchbacks beside Chilnualna Creek. Along the longer route, granite formations frame different sections of the falls and views across the Wawona area. Late spring and early summer bring the strongest flow. Stop at the lower falls for a picnic, or continue uphill if you are prepared for a strenuous hike.

The falls above Wawona

Chilnualna Falls

Chilnualna Falls lies in Yosemite National Park’s Wawona area, in the southern part of the park. Chilnualna Creek drops over granite in a sequence of cascades. The watercourse bends through the landscape, so the full falls cannot be seen from one viewpoint. Along the trail, you can spot different sections as you climb.

The lower falls are the easiest part to reach. The short route is about half a mile round trip, and the creek and cascades appear early in the walk. It is a practical choice if you have limited time or want to picnic near the water without taking on the full climb.

Choosing how far to hike

The trail continues uphill from the lower falls, following the creek before climbing forested switchbacks. The full hike is strenuous, with about 2,400 feet of elevation gain over roughly eight miles round trip. Views of the falls appear at several points, along with panoramas across the Wawona area. The upper sections take considerably more effort than the brief walk to the lower cascades.

The full route is a substantial hike, not a quick extension of the lower-falls stroll. Set aside five to seven hours for the round trip and carry plenty of water. Fallen trees have been reported on the trail, so be ready to adjust your pace if the route is obstructed.

When the water is strongest

Late spring and early summer are the best time to see Chilnualna Falls carrying its heaviest flow. Snowmelt feeds the creek, and the cascades are especially prominent during this period. The lower section can be a good stop on its own; hikers continuing uphill get changing views rather than a single complete panorama.

The trailhead is on Chilnualna Falls Road in Wawona. The approach passes through a residential area, and the falls are not visible from the road. Follow the trail to reach them, and choose the shorter lower-falls walk or the longer climb according to the time and energy you have.
