Willow Flats Overlook is a roadside viewpoint in Grand Teton National Park, near Jackson Lake Lodge.

Willow Flats Overlook is a roadside viewpoint in Grand Teton National Park, near Jackson Lake Lodge. From the pullout, look across marshy flats toward Jackson Lake and the Teton Range, with Mount Moran among the peaks in view. The willows and streams below attract moose and elk, and bears may also appear. Bring binoculars to scan the flats, and allow time for the light and cloud cover to shift across the mountains. A short trail from the parking area leads toward Lunch Tree Hill and beaver ponds.

Views across Jackson Lake and the flats

The overlook sits just south of Jackson Lake Lodge and looks over Willow Flats toward Jackson Lake and the Teton Range. Mount Moran is among the peaks visible from this side of the lake. The wide view takes in both the wetlands below and the mountains beyond, so you can frame the whole range or focus on the marshland.

The landscape is crossed by small streams and covered with willows, grasses and sagebrush. Jackson Lake may appear between the flats and the mountains. The view changes with the light: clouds moving over the peaks can shift their color, while reflections in the water add another element to photographs. Different times of day bring different lighting across the range.

Looking for wildlife

Moose and elk graze among the willows and grasses, and the marshy ground provides cover as well as food. Moose can be difficult to pick out among the vegetation, so scan slowly and bring binoculars. Bears are also seen in the area, and wolves have been reported on the flats. Wildlife sightings are never assured; the open view gives you a place to search without entering the habitat.

Early morning is a useful time to watch the flats, when elk and other animals may be active. In autumn, listen for bugling elk. The landscape also draws birds and waterfowl. Take care to observe from the designated viewpoint and give wildlife room.

Walking toward Lunch Tree Hill

A trail begins near the overlook parking area and leads toward Lunch Tree Hill, a high point beside Jackson Lake Lodge. The route looks over Willow Flats and Jackson Lake toward the Tetons. A short interpretive path near the lodge and a description of the walk as a one-mile hike both refer to this area; check current park information if you need route details before setting out.

The trail passes beaver ponds, where bird-watching is a reason to continue beyond the roadside stop. Willow Flats itself is closed to human entry from May 15 through July 15, during a period when elk use the vegetation for cover and forage and bears may pursue calves. Nearby viewing areas and pullouts remain the appropriate places to watch the flats during that closure.
