Lookout Point sits on Yellowstone’s North Rim, overlooking the Grand Canyon of the Yellowstone and the 308-foot Lower Falls. A short paved path leads to the viewpoint, where you can take in the canyon and watch the water plunge into it. In early morning, sunlight on the falls’ mist can form a rainbow. Informative plaques add geological context, and the stop fits naturally into a walk along the North Rim Trail.
The North Rim viewpoint

Lookout Point is partway along the North Rim Trail and can also be reached from the one-way North Rim Drive. From the lookout, the Lower Falls drops 308 feet into the Grand Canyon of the Yellowstone River. The viewpoint gives you a clear look at both the falls and the canyon below.
A short paved path leads to the overlook. Plaques along the way provide information about the area’s geology. Leave time to pause at the viewpoint and take in the scale of the canyon and the sound of the falling water.
A steeper route toward the falls

At a fork in the path, the right-hand route descends steeply by about 500 feet. It reaches a view closer to the falls, roughly half a mile downstream. The elevation change makes this a more demanding option than the short walk to Lookout Point, so consider your comfort with a steep descent before setting out.
Morning light can catch the mist above the Lower Falls and create a rainbow. The flow over the falls also changes with the season: it can reach 63,500 gallons per second during peak spring runoff and fall to 5,000 gallons per second in autumn.
