The Colonial Quarter is a two-acre living history attraction in St. Augustine’s historic district, near Castillo de San Marcos. Its four areas trace the city’s Spanish and British colonial periods through costumed interpreters, working demonstrations and reconstructed homes and shops. Watch a blacksmith at work, see a musket demonstration and climb the 35-foot watchtower for views of the city and bayfront. A guided tour introduces the site; afterward, you can explore exhibits and activities at your own pace. It suits families and anyone curious about how people lived and worked here.
Four periods of St. Augustine history

The Colonial Quarter covers two acres in St. Augustine’s historic district, close to Castillo de San Marcos. Its layout takes visitors through four periods: the 16th-century Spanish First City, the 17th-century Spanish Fortified Town, the 18th-century Spanish Garrison Town and the 18th-century British Colony. Costumed interpreters and demonstrations help explain daily life and work in each setting.
The site recreates a colonial neighborhood rather than preserving every building as an original structure. Many of the homes and workshops are replicas. The De Mesa-Sanchez House, dating from the 1740s, is among the historic buildings on the grounds; it stands on original foundations.
Demonstrations and activities

A guided tour introduces the historic areas and their stories. Demonstrations can include blacksmithing, musket drills and shipbuilding, with activities varying by day. The workshops and displays depict trades and domestic life, including work in a blacksmith’s shop and a soldier’s home. Exhibits also show period clothing, furniture and household utensils.
Some activities invite visitors to take part. Depending on what is available, you may be able to try a musket drill, work with pulleys, make a leather medallion or search for replica artifacts. The site also has examples of colonial military equipment and everyday crafts. Check what is running when you arrive if a particular demonstration is important to your visit.
Climb the watchtower
The 35-foot watchtower is one of the site’s main viewpoints. From the top, you can look across the historic district and bayfront, including toward Castillo de San Marcos. It is a useful stop for photos as well as a way to see how the quarter sits beside the fort and waterfront.
After the guided portion, leave time to walk through the grounds independently and revisit the exhibits that interest you. The quarter also has restaurants and shops, so you can combine a history visit with a meal or a look around the area. If you want to see more than one attraction, ticket combinations with the Pirate Treasure Museum are available to consider.
