A garden created through friendship

The Japanese Friendship Garden honors the bond between San Diego and Yokohama, its sister city in Japan. Its Japanese-inspired landscape uses water, plants and traditional architecture to create a place for quiet walks and contemplation. The garden also has a museum, where exhibits introduce Japanese culture and art.

Paths, ponds and seasonal flowers

As you walk through the grounds, look for koi ponds, a cascading waterfall, bonsai displays and cherry trees. The garden also includes a traditional stone and Zen garden, an azalea grove and the Inamori tea pavilion. Camellias and other flowering plants add color along the paths; cherry blossoms are a seasonal draw in March and April.

The garden covers 12 acres, with paths that connect its different settings. A map from the ticket booth can help you plan a route and find the features you most want to see. For a quieter visit and easier parking, arrive early. The third Tuesday of each month is a free day for San Diego residents.
