Mission San Jose was founded in 1720 by Fray Antonio Margil de Jesús. Its stone buildings and church give the site a strong architectural character, set among open, pastoral grounds. The mission is part of San Antonio’s historic mission landscape, with restored areas that help you see how the site was laid out.
Exhibits and outdoor spaces
Start at the visitor center, where an informative film introduces the mission’s history. Exhibits use art, architecture and Indigenous history to add context to the buildings. Outside, explore restored spaces such as the ovens and living areas, then follow the shaded trails around the grounds. The church remains active, so treat it as a place of worship when visiting.
