Brenton Point State Park

Brenton Point State Park sits along Ocean Drive at Newport’s southwestern tip, where Narragansett Bay meets the Atlantic.

Brenton Point State Park sits along Ocean Drive at Newport’s southwestern tip, where Narragansett Bay meets the Atlantic. Grassy lawns and a rocky shore make room for picnics, coastal walks, fishing and kite flying, with broad water views throughout. Look for the Portuguese Discovery Monument, or watch waves and boats from the shore. Bring a kite on a breezy day; food trucks sometimes stop nearby, including a stand selling Del’s frozen lemonade. The park is on the former grounds of the Reef estate, and its remaining observation tower recalls that history.

Brenton Point State Park lies on Ocean Drive at the southwestern end of Aquidneck Island. From its grassy slopes, you can look across Narragansett Bay and the Atlantic, which meet at this point. The rocky edge gives the shoreline a different character from the open lawns above it, and waves are often a focus of the view.

The park occupies the site of the Reef, once one of Newport’s grand estates. An observation tower is the remaining feature identified with the estate. The Portuguese Discovery Monument adds a maritime landmark to the grounds. Dedicated in 1988, it honors Portuguese navigators and people involved in charting maritime routes.

Walks, rocks and kites

Open grass and coastal paths make the park a useful stop on a drive along Ocean Drive or a cycling route. Take a walk above the water, then use the paths toward the shore to see the rocks and tide pools. Conditions change with the tide, so check it before heading down and use care on the uneven ground. Swimming is strongly discouraged here because of reefs and dangerous currents.

The breeze draws kite flyers to the lawns. Bring your own, or check for kites available to buy nearby. The park also hosts an annual kite festival on the second weekend of July. Bird watching, fishing and picnicking are other ways to spend time here; fishing takes place from the rocky shore.

Planning a stop

Picnic tables give you a place to settle in, and the grassy areas leave room to spread out. Food trucks sometimes park at the grounds, and Del’s frozen lemonade has been available there. Their presence is not guaranteed, so bring food and water if you want to plan a picnic around a meal.

The park has free parking and is open around the clock according to its listed schedule. Restroom facilities are seasonal, with information placing their availability between May and October; reports also note that access can end in the evening. If you are combining the stop with other Newport sights, Fort Adams and Castle Hill are nearby attractions mentioned for a fuller day along the coast.
