Stay in Lake Buena Vista if Disney is the plan and in the Universal area if Universal is. Choose International Drive to split days between both resorts, Kissimmee for space and a kitchen, and downtown or Winter Park for a calmer city base with a longer drive to the parks. Disney Resort guests can buy Lightning Lane passes seven days early, and Universal lists complimentary park transportation for its hotels.

How to choose an Orlando base
Orlando is not one place but several clusters that grew around the theme parks, and a hotel's location decides how many hours you spend in traffic. The Orlando travel guide covers the destination, and this page settles the base. For the wider picture of a US trip, see the USA guide.
Start with the plan, not the hotel. If most of your days are at Walt Disney World, the Lake Buena Vista area saves the most time. If most are at Universal Orlando Resort, the Universal area does. If you will split days between the two, a central base such as International Drive keeps both within a drive. If the parks fill only two or three of your days, a city base such as downtown or Winter Park may suit you better.
Perks matter at the margin. Disney lists that guests of Disney Resort hotels and select other hotels can purchase Lightning Lane passes up to seven days before their stay, and other guests can purchase them three days before their visit. Universal's site lists complimentary transportation to the parks for guests of its hotels, and it lists Early Park Admission among the benefits of its vacation packages. These are advantages for a park-focused trip, but they are not a reason to book a hotel that does not fit your plan. Price bands in this guide run from $ for budget to $$$ for upscale, and they show relative cost between areas, not quoted rates.
1. Lake Buena Vista and Disney Springs
Lake Buena Vista is the area immediately around Walt Disney World, and it includes Disney Springs, a shopping and dining district. It holds the Disney Resort hotels and a group of other hotels near the property, so you can reach the parks by resort transport or a short drive. It is the most convenient base if you plan four or more park days and want to be at the gate early.
The main advantage is time. A short transfer means you can return to the hotel midday for a rest, which matters with young children and in the summer heat. Disney also lists that guests of Disney Resort hotels and other select hotels can buy Lightning Lane passes seven days before their stay, which gives you a head start over guests who must wait three days. Check which hotels qualify before you book, because the list includes more than Disney's own resorts.
The trade-off is cost and distance from Universal. Rooms here run higher than on International Drive or in Kissimmee, and meals and extras are priced for visitors. A day at Universal means a longer drive and a parking fee, so if you plan to split resorts, consider a more central base. See Disney World vs Universal Orlando for how many days each resort needs.

2. International Drive
International Drive, known as I-Drive, is a long tourist strip between the two resorts, lined with hotels, restaurants and attractions. It has the widest choice of hotels at mid-range prices, and its central position makes it practical for a trip that splits days between Disney and Universal. It is also close to the convention center, so some weeks fill with business travelers.
I-Drive works best for visitors who plan to rent a car or use rideshare and who want to keep options open. Universal's hotels offer complimentary transport to its own parks, but I-Drive guests either drive or pay for a ride, so parking and transfer costs belong in your budget. The strip has plenty of casual restaurants, which helps when you want a late dinner after a long day.
The downside is the setting. The area is a busy commercial strip, traffic is heavy at peak times, and it does not feel like a resort. If you want to wake up inside the theme-park experience, or want a quiet street, look at Lake Buena Vista or Winter Park instead.

3. Universal Orlando area
Universal Orlando Resort has four parks: Universal Studios Florida, Islands of Adventure, Epic Universe and the Volcano Bay water park, plus the CityWalk dining and entertainment district. Staying near it, either at a Universal hotel or a partner hotel, shortens every park day. Universal's site lists complimentary transportation to the parks for guests of its hotels and lists Early Park Admission among the benefits of its vacation packages.
The Universal hotels range from signature properties to value-oriented rooms, and Universal's express-pass page lists a free Express benefit for guests at select Signature Collection hotels. Terms vary by hotel and package, so check the details before you book. Partner hotels in the area do not carry those perks, so compare what is included.
The cost is the same as for Disney: higher rates and a longer drive to the other resort. If Disney is on your list, check how long the drive is at your travel time, because traffic changes it. If Universal fills most of your itinerary, this base is the most efficient.

4. Kissimmee and Celebration
Kissimmee, along the US-192 corridor south of Disney, and the planned town of Celebration offer something the other bases do not: space. Vacation homes, villas and extended-stay suites with kitchens make it the base of choice for large families and groups that stay for a week or more. Grocery stores and casual restaurants are easy to reach by car.
The trade-off is that nothing is walkable. You need a car or frequent rideshare for the parks, supermarkets and restaurants, and the drive to Disney can be slow at morning and evening peaks. Houses vary in age and upkeep, so read recent reviews on cleanliness and furnishings, and check whether a listing charges extra fees for pools or cleaning.
This base is also less suited to a short trip. If you have only three or four nights, the extra transfers cut into park time. For a week or more with children, a house with a kitchen can offset the drive.

5. Downtown and Winter Park
Downtown Orlando has Lake Eola, a growing dining scene and an arts district, and Winter Park, to the north, is a leafy town with a walkable main street and museums. Together they give you a base with a local feel that the theme-park areas lack. They suit couples, visitors who mix a day or two at the parks with other activities and anyone who dislikes tourist strips.
The distance is the cost. The parks are a drive away, so each park day starts with a longer ride, and you will not return to the hotel midday. It makes sense if you plan only one or two park days or if you are not taking young children who need midday rests.
Winter Park is also an easy base for non-park outings. A short drive takes you to museums, lakes and day trips, and the area is quieter at night than the tourist corridors. If you plan to add the Space Coast, the drive east is simpler from here than from Kissimmee.

A good pick if you want a downtown stay away from the theme parks.

Which base for which kind of trip
If you are visiting for the first time with children, choose Lake Buena Vista for a Disney-first plan or the Universal area for a Universal-first plan. The short transfers, midday breaks and resort perks help more than a lower rate does. If your group is large and the trip is a week or more, Kissimmee can lower the cost per person, but you must budget for a car.
If you are splitting your trip between the two resorts, International Drive is the practical middle. If you are visiting as a couple or have only a day or two at the parks, downtown or Winter Park gives you a different Orlando. If you are arriving from South Florida by rail, the on-site Brightline station at Orlando International lets you pick up transport without a long taxi. The Miami travel guide covers the other end of that line.
Booking tips
Book early for school holidays, spring break and the weeks around major holidays, and check cancellation terms during hurricane season, which runs from June 1 to November 30. The best time to visit Orlando guide shows how crowds, heat and storms line up by month. Midweek stays and shoulder dates are usually cheaper than weekends and holidays, though ticket prices vary by day on the official sites.
Read the price breakdown before you pay. Some Orlando hotels add resort fees, parking charges or other fees to the room rate, and the headline price may not include them. Check whether a rate includes breakfast, shuttle service and parking, and compare the total price at checkout across areas, because a lower rate can cost more after fees and drives.
You do not always need a car. Disney and Universal hotels run park transport, and rideshare covers short trips. A rental car pays off if you stay off-site, split days between resorts or add a trip to the Space Coast. If you are arriving from abroad, get your ESTA approved before you book non-refundable rooms.
Before you go, compare an eSIM for the USA and travel insurance for the trip. For routes that start in Orlando, getting around the USA compares trains, buses and rental cars.
Häufige Fragen
What is the best area to stay in Orlando for theme parks?
Lake Buena Vista for Walt Disney World and the Universal area for Universal Orlando. If you plan to visit both resorts, International Drive sits between them and keeps drives reasonable, though it has neither resort's perks.
Is it worth staying on Disney property?
It depends on your plan. Disney Resort and select hotel guests can buy Lightning Lane passes 7 days before their stay, instead of 3 days for others, and resort transport removes a parking step. Off-site stays can cost less, so compare the total.
Do Universal hotels include park transportation?
Universal's site lists complimentary transportation to the parks among the benefits of staying at its hotels, and it lists Early Park Admission among vacation package benefits. Check the hotel page and package terms before you book.
Where should you stay if you do not want theme parks every day?
Downtown Orlando or Winter Park, which have lakes, museums and restaurants. Parks are a car or rideshare away, so this base suits visits that mix a park day or two with city time.
How far is Orlando airport from the theme parks?
Orlando International (MCO) is a car, shuttle or rideshare ride from all the bases here. The airport lists several ground transport options on its site, and has its own Brightline station for trains to South Florida.
