A royal project in the Anglican tradition

King Kamehameha IV and Queen Emma set the cathedral project in motion as a place to worship in the Anglican tradition. Their interest followed a visit to England, where they were impressed by the Church of England. Kamehameha V continued the project after his predecessor’s death, and the cornerstone was laid in 1867.
The building was made in the French Gothic style. Stone and stained-glass pieces were brought from England, with parts of the structure prefabricated there before being shipped to Hawaiʻi. The cathedral is now home to the bishop of the Episcopal Diocese of Hawaiʻi.
Royal history and stained glass

The cathedral’s connection to Hawaiʻi’s monarchy continued beyond its founding. Queen Liliʻuokalani found solace within its walls during her imprisonment and later joined the Episcopal Church there.
Inside, take time to view the large stained-glass windows, which depict the early exploration of the Hawaiian Islands. The cathedral is also used for musical performances, with acoustics suited to concerts. Community events include brown bag lunch concerts and special shows; check the cathedral’s social media for current music details.
