Santana Row is a 42-acre outdoor shopping and dining district in West San Jose, built in the early 2000s with a European-style plan of wide pedestrian streets, fountains and tree-lined sidewalks. Locals call it The Row. Shops, restaurants, cafés, spas and a cinema sit alongside apartments and a hotel, so there is plenty to do from late morning into the evening. It suits a relaxed afternoon: browse the stores, sit on a patio, then walk the lit streets after dark.

How the district was built

Santana Row

Santana Row opened in the early 2000s on a 42-acre site in West San Jose. Its developers planned it as a village inside the city, with a layout that draws on the fountains and cobblestone streets of European towns.

The district takes its name from Frank M. Santana, who served on San Jose's planning commission. It mixes uses: shops and restaurants sit at street level, and apartments and the Hotel Valencia rise above the ground-floor businesses. The Burke Williams day spa has been part of the district since 2003.

Streets, fountains and public space

Santana Row is built for walking. The main street through the outdoor mall is closed to cars, and the pedestrian areas connect sidewalk cafés, plazas and patios. Fountains are scattered through the district, and cobblestone-style walkways link the blocks.

Public art installations appear along the route, and grassy areas give visitors a place to sit and listen to music. A central square gives the walk a clear focal point.

Shopping and dining

The shops range from luxury names such as Gucci and Louis Vuitton to chains such as H&M and Kate Spade, plus local boutiques, home-furnishing stores and a maker's market. Expect a mix rather than one style.

For food, the ramen restaurant and the steakhouse are among the stronger picks. Cocola Bakery serves coffee, baked goods and artisanal gelato, a common stop for a mid-afternoon break. Left Bank Brasserie suits a candlelit dinner, Grub Burger Bar serves burgers, homemade onion rings and classic shakes, and Roots and Rye is a bar for whiskey drinkers.

On certain days, the Makers' Market, an outdoor craft fair, is held in the district. Special events such as car and fashion shows also take place here, so check the calendar before you visit.
