Abraham Redwood founded the library in 1747 with a gift of 500 pounds sterling to support a library of arts and sciences. The institution opened in 1750 with 751 titles. It was established with 45 other colonists to make written knowledge more widely available.

The Redwood is the oldest library still operating in its original building. Its history also includes the British occupation of Newport during the Revolutionary War, when the building was used as an officers’ club. Many books disappeared from its shelves during that period; much of the original collection was later recovered or replaced.

Architect Peter Harrison designed the Georgian Palladian-style building. Its wooden exterior and columns are finished to resemble stonework. The result is a notable example of Newport’s early architecture, with details to look for both outside and within.

A room inside is devoted to American portraiture. Paintings on display have included five portraits by Gilbert Stuart. The library’s rooms and grounds also provide a quieter place to pause during a day in Newport.

Books, art and public events

The Redwood is both a library and a place to view art and historical material. Its collection includes rare books, while rotating displays bring artifacts and artworks into the galleries. Exhibitions change, so check the library’s website before your visit if you have a particular show in mind.

Public cultural events include concerts and garden parties in warmer months. The library has also hosted concerts alongside opportunities to walk through the rooms and view documents and portraits. Check the website for current programming. Admission is free, and donations are appreciated.
