The Woolworth Building

The Woolworth Building rises above Broadway in Lower Manhattan, at 233 Broadway.

The Woolworth Building rises above Broadway in Lower Manhattan, at 233 Broadway. Completed in 1913, the 792-foot skyscraper was the world’s tallest for nearly two decades. Cass Gilbert’s Neo-Gothic design gives its facade the look of a cathedral, with detailed terra-cotta work and a pointed crown. You can take in the exterior from the street or City Hall Park, and scheduled tours provide limited access to the ornate lobby, with its marble, mosaics and vaulted ceiling. Book ahead, since tour places are limited.

A skyscraper with a Gothic profile

The Woolworth Building stands at 233 Broadway in Lower Manhattan. Designed by architect Cass Gilbert and financed by retailer Frank Woolworth, it opened in 1913. At 792 feet, it held the title of the world’s tallest building until 1930.

Its Neo-Gothic style sets it apart from the glass-and-steel towers nearby. Look up at the pointed crown and the decorative terra-cotta facade, where gargoyles, arched details and windows framed in blue and green glazed tiles reward a closer look. The scale is easier to take in from City Hall Park, which gives you a more open view of the building from street level.

Inside the lobby

The lobby is known for its marble surfaces, glass mosaics and large vaulted ceiling. Its detailed ornament and cathedral-like interior carry the Gothic character of the exterior indoors. The elevators and their decorative details are also part of what makes the interior distinctive.

Access inside is limited. Scheduled guided tours take visitors into the lobby, and tour places can book out, so arrange a visit ahead of time. Open House New York events may provide access to areas that are not normally open to the public. Entry to other parts of the building should not be assumed; access is controlled.

Planning a visit

If you cannot get a tour, the facade is still worth a stop. From the sidewalk, the building’s height and pointed crown are visible, and its terra-cotta details become easier to pick out with binoculars or a camera zoom. Street-level retail or scaffolding can sometimes interrupt a clear view.

Check the rules before photographing inside. Photography has been restricted at times, although photography tours have also been scheduled. Tour arrangements and access can differ, so confirm the details when booking. The building is close to other Lower Manhattan sights, including Wall Street and the New York Stock Exchange, which can fit into the same area walk.
