Lefferts Historic House is an 18th-century Dutch Colonial farmhouse in Prospect Park, Brooklyn. Built around 1783 in Flatbush, it was moved to the park in 1918 and is now a museum focused on the area’s history. Its displays address the lives of Dutch settlers, Lenape people and enslaved Africans, including the Lefferts family’s history of slave ownership. Stop in for a look at the house and its exhibits, or check the schedule for children’s educational programs. Admission is free.

A Flatbush farmhouse moved to Prospect Park

The house was built around 1783 by the Lefferts family in the farming village of Flatbush. It remained with four generations of the family, whose land was used mainly for farming. The house stood on Flatbush Avenue before it was moved to Prospect Park in 1918 to save it from demolition. New York City designated it a landmark in 1966.

Today, the farmhouse is run as a museum by Prospect Park Alliance and the Historic House Trust. Its location in the park’s Children’s Corner puts it near the carousel and the Willink entrance. The address is 452 Flatbush Avenue.

Stories of the people who lived here

The museum interprets Brooklyn’s past through the histories of Dutch settlers, Lenape people and enslaved Africans. The Lefferts family owned enslaved people, and the house’s interpretation gives attention to slavery and racism as part of its history. Exhibits and artifacts connect the farmhouse to life in the Flatbush community.

The house has been used for children’s educational programs, including crafts, readings and activities with historical and environmental themes. Check the program schedule ahead of your visit to see what is happening. Admission is free.
