Jackson Square

Jackson Square is a historic park in the French Quarter, framed by St.

Jackson Square is a historic park in the French Quarter, framed by St. Louis Cathedral and the Cabildo, Presbytère and Pontalba Buildings. Its green paths and central equestrian statue make a pause here as much about architecture as the artists, musicians and fortune tellers around the iron fence. Browse the local artwork, watch a street performance or continue toward the Mississippi River for a view back across the square. The surrounding blocks also have museums, galleries, shops and cafés.

A square shaped by the city’s history

Jackson Square

Jackson Square began as Place d’Armes, a name used during New Orleans’ colonial period. It was later renamed for Andrew Jackson, whose equestrian statue stands at the center. The square is also linked to the Louisiana Purchase: its final version was signed in the Cabildo, the historic building beside the cathedral.

The park was declared a National Historic Landmark in 1960. Its setting brings together several periods of local history in a compact area, so a walk around the square can take in the cathedral, former civic buildings and the Pontalba Buildings without leaving the French Quarter.

St. Louis Cathedral anchors one end of the square. Its white façade and spires are a prominent feature of the French Quarter skyline. The cathedral has been rebuilt after a hurricane and a fire, and remains in continuous use.

The Cabildo and the Presbytère stand beside the cathedral. Both are Louisiana State Museum sites, with exhibits on the state’s history. The Pontalba Buildings border the square on two sides. Their ground floors contain shops, galleries, museums and restaurants, while upper floors include apartments. Look up at the iron galleries and balconies as you walk along the park’s edges.

Art, performances and a riverfront walk

Artists display work along the square’s iron fence and nearby sidewalks. You can browse the paintings and crafts, or pause to watch musicians and other street performers. Fortune tellers also set up around the square. The mix changes with the people working there, so allow time to look around rather than crossing the park in a hurry.

For a broader walk, continue along the nearby streets to the French Market or the galleries and shops around Royal Street. The Mississippi River is across the street from the square; from the riverfront side, you can look back toward the park and its historic buildings. Nearby cafés and restaurants make it easy to add a break for coffee or a meal.
