The Naples Zoo at Caribbean Gardens is a zoo built inside a historic tropical garden on Goodlette-Frank Road, beside the Gordon River Greenway Park. The paths are easy to walk, shade is simple to find, and the grounds are kept clean. The collection includes giraffes, big cats, bears, zebras, alligators, reptiles and many birds. The boat ride to Monkey Island is a highlight, with monkeys, apes and lemurs living on small islands in the lake. Informative volunteers at the enclosures share background on the animals.
From tropical garden to zoo

The grounds began as a tropical garden in 1919, and that garden is still the setting for the zoo. Animal exhibits arrived about fifty years later. When they were added, care was taken to protect the plant life, so the planting around the enclosures is part of the visit.
The site was once known as Jungle Larry's. It is now run as a nonprofit and holds national accreditation. After several rounds of changes over the years, the collection grew to about seventy species.
What you will see

The collection includes giraffes, lions, tigers, bears, zebras, pythons, alligators, a giant anteater, a Florida panther, orangutans, lemurs and many species of birds and reptiles. Several enclosures are set up to resemble natural habitats.
Alligator feeding is one of the scheduled events, and educational shows run during the day. Feeding the giraffes is available for an extra fee. A jungle-style playground suits younger children, and there are tables set up for family groups.
The Monkey Island boat ride
The Primate Expedition Cruise is a boat trip of about 15 minutes across Victoria Lake. The route passes islands where monkeys, apes and lemurs live. The ride is part of the entry fee and offers a quieter stretch of the visit between walks past the enclosures.
Planning the visit
Parking is free and ample, but it fills fast on busy days, so arrive a few minutes before opening. The entrance, seating and parking lot are wheelchair accessible.
Group events, field trips and birthday celebrations are offered. The gift shop sells souvenirs, and a photo service is available at the start of the visit, with prints ready at the end.
The food options on site are sold at higher prices, so plan a meal around them if you want to save money.
Getting there
The Gordon River Greenway boardwalk trail connects to the zoo, so the two can be combined in one day. The zoo sits on the east side of Goodlette-Frank Road, just south of Coastland Mall.
