Cooper-Molera Adobe is a historic house and garden at 506 Munras Ave in downtown Monterey. Built by sea captain John Rogers Cooper in 1827, the adobe traces the lives of his family and the city’s changing history. Explore the home’s preserved interiors, then follow the paths through the walled garden and its barns. Alta Bakery and Cella Restaurant share the grounds, so you can also stop for food or a break in the garden. The museum’s interpretation continues to develop as restoration work progresses.

John Rogers Cooper, a New England sea captain who became a merchant and landowner in Monterey, built the adobe in 1827. He later brought his half-brother Thomas O. Larkin to Monterey to help with his business. The house and grounds tell the story of the Cooper family over three generations, including Cooper’s wife, Encarnación Vallejo de Cooper.

The property changed over time. The adobe was remodeled repeatedly through 1900, and Cooper descendants owned it until 1968. Its history spans the period when Monterey was part of Mexican Alta California and the years after it became part of the state of California. The exhibits connect the family’s lives with the city’s past and the different social and political structures that shaped it.

Inside the adobe and around the grounds

The house’s preserved interiors give a sense of how a prosperous merchant family lived. Antiques and family memorabilia help bring that domestic history into view. A museum presentation adds context about the Cooper and Molera families and Monterey; restoration work has also brought fresh interpretation to parts of the site.

Outside, paths cross the walled garden, where flowers and fruit trees grow among historic buildings. The grounds include barns as well as the adobe house. Take time to walk the garden rather than treating the house as the only stop, and speak with volunteers tending the grounds if you would like to hear more about their care.

A stop for food as well as history

Alta Bakery and Cella Restaurant share the property, with the garden and patio forming part of the setting. The bakery has pastries, and the restaurant provides another option for a meal. Their presence makes it easy to pair a museum visit with a food stop without leaving the grounds.

Cooper-Molera Adobe is part of Monterey’s Old Town Historic District, near other historic buildings along the downtown walking route. If you are following the city’s Path of History, its round yellow sidewalk markers point out historic sites around downtown. Check the current schedule before setting out: the museum is open Thursday through Sunday, and advance tickets are recommended.
