Mākena State Park, south of Wailea on Maui, is known for Big Beach, a long stretch of soft sand backed by a 360-foot dormant cinder cone. The park also includes Little Beach, reached by a short, steep climb over rocky ground. Big Beach has room to walk, sunbathe and take in views toward Molokini and Kahoʻolawe; its powerful shore break calls for caution in the water. Little Beach has clear water and is clothing optional. Bring water and food, as facilities are limited.
Big Beach and the cinder cone

Big Beach, also called Oneloa, is the park’s main shoreline: a wide stretch of sand with views across the water toward Molokini and Kahoʻolawe. The sand is soft, and the open coast gives you room to walk or find a place to sit. A dormant volcanic cinder cone rises beside the beach, adding a distinct landmark to the coastal scenery.
The shore break is steep and can produce large, forceful waves. Swimming and bodyboarding are activities people come for, but conditions at Big Beach are not suited to every swimmer. Check the surf before entering and stay within your abilities.
Reaching Little Beach

Little Beach, also known as Puʻu Olaʻi, lies beyond a short but challenging climb over rocky ground. Take sturdy footwear for the route. The beach is clothing optional, so be prepared for that before making the climb. Its clear water and views across the surrounding islands make it a different stop from the broad, open sand at Big Beach.
Sunday gatherings with drummers and dancers have been noted at Little Beach. If you visit, treat the gathering and other beachgoers with respect.
