The Kapalua Coastal Trail is an easy seaside walk on Maui’s northwest coast, linking Kapalua Bay with D.T. Fleming Beach. The mostly flat route shifts between paved paths, boardwalk, sand and uneven lava rock, with ocean views throughout. Along the way, you can pause at beaches, tide pools and scenic viewpoints; in winter, look out to sea for migrating whales. It’s a good choice for a relaxed coastal outing, though rocky sections call for sturdy shoes and a little extra care.

A coastal route between beaches

The Kapalua Coastal Trail follows Maui’s northwest shoreline between Kapalua Bay and D.T. Fleming Beach. The walk passes several bays and beaches, including Oneloa Bay, and runs beside the resort area. Much of the route is flat and easy to follow, but its surface changes along the way: expect paved sections, boardwalk, sand and rocky stretches of lava.

Treat the route as a coastal walk, not a uniform paved path. The lava-rock sections are uneven, particularly around the tide pools, and some access points require careful footing. Comfortable shoes make it easier to enjoy the scenery without watching every step on the smoother parts.

Beaches, lava rock and tide pools

The shoreline is the main event. Look for ocean viewpoints and photo stops as the trail passes sandy beaches and dark lava formations. The path gives access to swimming beaches, and the tide pools are a reason to spend extra time near the rocky points. Getting down to the pools can be more challenging than walking the main route, so take care on the uneven rock.

The beaches differ along the way. One is narrow, with calmer water suited to snorkeling; another farther along is wider and has rougher surf. Check the conditions before swimming, and bring your own swimwear and snorkeling gear if you want to get in the water. Seabirds nest in parts of the area, and the ocean can bring whale sightings during migration season.

Planning the walk

The trail is an out-and-back walk, so you can turn around when you have seen enough or continue between the beaches. Allow roughly 1.5 to 2.5 hours for the walk, depending on your pace and how long you stop. People who add beach time or explore tide pools can make a longer outing of it.

There are parking options near the trail, including free and paid parking. Arriving before 10 am can make parking easier. With little shade along the exposed route, bring sunscreen and water, and plan your walk around the sun and heat. Nearby resorts and restaurants can provide a place to pause for refreshments.
