Stay in Poipu for sun and calm beaches, Princeville or Hanalei for the North Shore and Hāʻena, and Kapaa or Wailua for a central, lower-priced base. Lihue is only for late arrivals and early flights. No road circles the island, so do not try to cover both ends from one bed on a short trip.

Kauaʻi has no single center, and where you sleep decides how much of your trip is spent in the car. The Kauaʻi travel guide covers the sights; this page settles the base. It also fits the island into a wider trip to Hawaii and the USA.
The island is shaped like a circle with a gap. The Nā Pali Coast blocks the road on the northwest, so you cannot drive all the way around. The north shore, the east side, the south and the west are connected by two highways that meet near Līhuʻe, and the longest drives are between the north end and the west end. A base on the east or south side shortens the daily drives.
How to choose
Three things decide the choice. The first is weather. The south around Poipu is the driest and sunniest, while the north around Princeville and Hanalei is the greenest and wettest, with large surf in winter. Our best time to visit Kauaʻi guide covers the seasons.
The second is Hāʻena State Park, which holds Kēʻē Beach and the start of the Kalalau Trail. Non-Hawaii residents need an advance reservation, so a base near Hanalei or Princeville helps, because a shuttle runs from both. The third is the length of your trip. For five nights or more, split the stay between two bases, one north and one south or east.
Property types vary by area: resorts and condos in Poipu, small hotels, condos and rentals in Kapaa and Wailua, and rentals, condos and a few resorts in Princeville and Hanalei. Price bands below are per night for a double room: $ is a basic room, $$ a mid-range hotel or condo, $$$ a resort or luxury rental.
1. Poipu
Poipu sits on the south shore, where the weather is the most reliable. Beaches are calmer than on the north side in winter, and the area has resorts, condos, restaurants and a golf course. It suits families, beach-focused trips and anyone who wants winter sun.
It is also the best base for Waimea Canyon, which is about an hour away by road. The drive to Hāʻena State Park, however, is long, about 1.5 to 2 hours each way. If the North Shore matters, do not make Poipu your only base.
The Maluhia Road tree tunnel on the way in is a good first photo stop, and Spouting Horn, a blowhole on the coast, is a short drive from the resorts. Check the sea conditions before you swim, and read the lifeguard flags.

2. Kapaa and Wailua
Kapaa and Wailua on the east side are the practical center of the island. From here you can reach Hanalei in about 40 minutes, Poipu in about 45 and Waimea Canyon in about 1.5 to 2 hours. The area has shops, cafés, a coastal bike path and rooms at several price levels.
The beaches here are less suited to swimming than those in Poipu, and the traffic on the highway through Kapaa can be slow at rush hours. Wailua has the river and a few waterfall stops, including ʻOpaekaʻa Falls, a short drive from the road.
This is the best base for a first trip if you want one bed and several days of drives. It is also usually the best value, because rooms cost less than in Poipu or Princeville.

3. Princeville and Hanalei
Princeville and Hanalei are the North Shore base. Hanalei Bay is a long beach with mountains behind it, and Hāʻena State Park and the Kalalau Trail lie at the end of the road. A shuttle for Hāʻena runs from Hanalei and from Princeville, according to the park's reservation site, which makes this the easiest base for that part of the island.
It rains more here, and in winter big swells hit the beaches, so swimming is often unsafe on the north coast from late autumn to spring. Several one-lane bridges slow the road, and the drive to the south or the airport is long.
Lodging is mainly rentals, condos and a few resorts. Book early for Hāʻena, because the reservation system opens 30 days ahead and slots go quickly. See Hanalei for the town itself.

4. Lihue
Līhuʻe is the main town and has the airport, big shops and the hospital. It is not a beach base, but it is the easiest place for a late arrival or a dawn flight. The beach at Kalapaki is nearby.
Use it for one night at the start or end of a trip, then move to a base that suits your plans. A night here lets you collect the car, shop for groceries and avoid driving north or south at night.

Check the total price before you book. Many resorts add daily resort fees and parking charges, and condos may add cleaning fees, so compare the full cost, not the nightly rate. Look at the cancellation terms too, because weather can change plans in winter.
Splitting your stay on a longer trip
For three or four nights, pick one base and accept some long drives. Kapaa and Wailua suit this best because they sit in the middle, and Poipu suits a beach-first trip. Do not make Lihue your base unless your plans are all about the airport.
For five nights, split two and three: two nights on the north shore for Hāʻena and Hanalei, and three in Poipu for Waimea Canyon, a boat trip and beaches. For seven nights, add a night in Kapaa in the middle, or stay three in the north, two in the east and two in the south. Each move costs about half a day of packing and driving, so avoid more than two moves.
Moving day is easier if you plan a stop. Leave the north shore after a late breakfast, take the drive through Kapaa outside rush hours and reach Poipu in the afternoon. Check-in times at resorts and condos are often mid-afternoon, so you lose nothing by starting late.
What about the west side?
The west side, around Waimea and Kekaha, has a few small inns and rentals, and it is the closest base to Waimea Canyon. It is also quiet, with few restaurants and a long drive to the north shore. Most visitors do the west side as a day trip from Poipu rather than a base.
Polihale State Park at the end of the western road is a remote beach reached by an unpaved road. Check the state park page and your car-hire terms before you go, because many rental contracts forbid unpaved roads.
Seasons and your base
The season changes the best base. In winter, the south is drier and the north has big surf, so Poipu is the safer choice for a beach holiday. In summer, the north shore beaches are calmer, and Princeville and Hanalei are at their best. Spring and autumn suit any base. For the details, read our guide to the best time to visit Kauaʻi.
Who should skip each base
Poipu is a poor fit if the North Shore is the point of your trip, because the drive to Hāʻena and Hanalei is long and every extra mile eats a day. Kapaa and Wailua do not suit travelers who want a quiet resort beach, since the sea there is rougher and the highway through town gets busy. Princeville and Hanalei are the wrong choice in winter if you want to swim, and for anyone who dislikes rain, one-lane bridges and a long drive to the airport.
Līhuʻe is the wrong base for anyone who wants atmosphere, a beach walk or a place to linger after dinner. The west side is the wrong base unless you want solitude and are happy to cook, since restaurants and shops are few.
Costs, fees and traps to check
Room rates on Kauaʻi vary more with the season than with the town, so compare the same dates across two or three bases before you choose. Resort fees and parking charges are common at resorts, and condos and rentals often add cleaning fees, so a low nightly rate can hide a high total. Check the cancellation terms for winter bookings, when storms and swells can reshuffle plans.
Minimum stays are a second trap. Many rentals and condos require three or more nights, which can force a split stay to be built around the property's rules rather than the island's geography. If a property you like has a long minimum, use it for the base where you will spend most of your time and fill the rest with a shorter hotel stay.
Groceries and water are another cost. Resort areas have fewer budget food options, so stay somewhere with a kitchen or near a supermarket if you plan to eat in. Līhuʻe and Kapaa have the larger stores, which makes the airport town a handy first stop to stock up.
Which base for which traveler
Families with young children often do best in Poipu, where the beaches are calm and the weather is the most reliable. Couples after scenery and a slow pace tend to choose Princeville or Hanalei in summer. Travelers on a first trip with one bed and several days of drives usually do best in Kapaa or Wailua. Anyone with an early departure should consider a night in Līhuʻe.
If you are traveling with mobility limits, check the access to your room, the distance to the beach and the length of drives, since walking surfaces on trails and beaches are uneven. If you plan to spend most days at a resort pool, the base matters less than the room and the weather.
Mistakes to avoid
Choosing a single base for a seven-night trip. The long drives add up.
Booking the North Shore in winter and expecting beach days. Check the surf first.
Ignoring minimum stays and cleaning fees. Compare the total price, not the nightly rate.
Forgetting the Hāʻena reservation window. Book as soon as it opens if you stay in the north.
Planning a late arrival into a remote base. Use Līhuʻe for the first night if you land after dark.
Booking tips and when to book
Book the car and the room together, and book early for the holidays in December, school holidays in summer and the whale-watching months of winter. Rentals and condos often have minimum stays, so check the terms.
A rental car is needed on most trips. See our guide to getting around the USA for driving rules, and check the car-hire terms for fuel and airport fees.

Häufige Fragen
Where is the best place to stay in Kauaʻi?
For most first trips, Kapaa or Wailua on the east side, because it is central. Poipu is better for sun and swimming, and Princeville or Hanalei is better for the North Shore and Hāʻena State Park.
Is it better to stay on the north or south shore of Kauaʻi?
North for scenery and Hāʻena, south for sun and calm beaches. The north is greener and wetter and gets large winter surf; the south is drier and sunnier. On a week-long trip, split the stay.
Should you split your stay in Kauaʻi?
Yes, for five nights or more. The Nā Pali Coast blocks the road, so the north shore and the west side are separate drives. Two bases save hours of driving.
How far is Poipu from the Kauaʻi airport?
About 25 minutes by car from Līhuʻe airport. Princeville is about 50 to 60 minutes, and Kapaa about 15 to 20 minutes.
Do you need a rental car on Kauaʻi?
Yes, for most visitors. Sights are far apart and public transport is limited. Book the car early, especially in holiday weeks, and plan the driving around your base.
