Cuban exiles in Key West established the San Carlos Institute in 1871 as a center for education, civic life and Cuban identity. Its story connects the island’s independence movement with the Cuban community that took root in Key West.

In 1892, Cuban patriot José Martí spoke at the institute and announced the formation of a united front for Cuba’s independence. The museum’s exhibits include material on Martí and the history of Cuba, alongside objects that show the institute’s ties to Key West and the United States.

The institute brings several parts of its history together under one roof. Visitors can browse the museum and art gallery, and see rooms dedicated to Cuban martyrs and cigar workers. Exhibits cover topics including Cuban postcards, aviation and the country’s presidents.

Building materials from Cuba and original interior details connect the displays to the place itself. Tilework and the building’s architecture are also part of the visit. The institute’s work has expanded beyond its original educational and civic role: it now houses a library and serves as a venue for community college classes.

The San Carlos Theater

The theater has been part of the institute’s cultural life since its early years. It hosted touring ballet, opera and theater companies, and today presents concerts and other theatrical events. It is also used for a short documentary about Cuban history, which runs for 20 minutes.

The theater is described as the oldest in Key West. Its restoration returned it to use as a performance space, alongside its role within the institute’s museum and heritage center.
