Vista House at Crown Point is a stone building on a cliff about 730 feet above the Columbia River, in the Columbia River Gorge. Its two-tier octagonal design has been a landmark on the Historic Columbia River Highway since it was built between 1916 and 1918. The main reason to stop is the view, which reaches up and down the river for roughly 30 miles from the observation deck. Inside, you can read the historical displays, browse a small gift shop and get coffee before you continue toward Multnomah Falls.
Why the house was built

Vista House was built between 1916 and 1918. It serves two purposes: a memorial to Oregon's pioneers and a scenic rest stop for travelers on the Historic Columbia River Highway. The building is two tiers and octagonal, set on the edge of a cliff roughly 730 feet above the river.
The stone building has been restored, and its interior has marble floors and stained glass.
Inside the building

Historical exhibits inside cover the history of the region, and an observation deck is part of the building. Entry to the building is free.
A small gift shop sells local goods, and a coffee shop and restrooms are on site. Pets are not allowed inside, though they are welcome on the outdoor grounds.
The view and the wind
From the observation deck you can see up and down the river for roughly 30 miles. Sunrise, sunset and clear days give the most striking views, and sunset is a popular time for photographs.
Wind here can be very strong, and one visit recorded gusts near 40 mph. Dress for it and secure hats and loose items on the deck.
Parking, access and the road
Parking can fill quickly on weekends and summer afternoons. The site has free and paid parking lots and paid street parking, so read the signs before you park.
The entrance, restroom and parking lot are wheelchair accessible, and a gender-neutral restroom is available. Some highway sections and viewpoints have closed at times, so check road status before you set out. Multnomah Falls is a common next stop, and its timed entry is booked online.
