Jackson Park Golf Course is a public course at 6401 S Richards Dr on Chicago’s South Side. Designed by Tom Bendelow in 1900, it occupies land that hosted the 1893 World’s Columbian Exposition. Its 18 holes mix narrow drives with short par 5s and long par 3s, giving you a varied round. There is also a driving range. Bunkers are compacted dirt, so plan your shots with that surface in mind. You can walk the course or use a golf cart; walking avoids the extra cart cost noted by players.
A public course with exposition-era roots
Jackson Park Golf Course opened in 1900 and was designed by Tom Bendelow, one of the early designers of public golf courses in the Midwest. The course lies on land that held the World’s Columbian Exposition in 1893. Its setting connects a day of golf with a major chapter in Chicago’s history.
The course has 18 holes, and the wider parkland setting is part of its appeal. A driving range is also available, giving you a place to hit balls without playing a full round.
How the course plays
Narrow drives make accuracy useful from the tee. The layout mixes short par 5s with long par 3s, so the holes vary in length and approach. Players describe the fairways and greens as challenging.
The bunkers are compacted dirt rather than traditional sand. Take that into account when choosing how to play out of one, and rake it after your shot. The course also has a nine-hole option listed among its facilities, alongside the 18-hole course.
You can walk or rent a golf cart. Walking is a practical way to avoid the additional cart expense. A round of 18 holes has taken around four hours, though your pace depends on play ahead.
