Strumble Head Lighthouse stands on a rocky island off the Pencaer Peninsula in northern Pembrokeshire, near Goodwick. The white lighthouse and its narrow suspension bridge make a striking coastal landmark, with cliffs, sea views and paths along the headland to explore. The lighthouse is not open to the public, so plan to enjoy it from the mainland and make time for the surrounding coastline. Look out for seals among the rocks, and visit near sunset for changing light over the sea.

The lighthouse and its island

Strumble Head Lighthouse stands on Ynys Meicel, a small rocky island just off the Pencaer headland in northern Pembrokeshire. A narrow suspension bridge connects the island to the mainland. The white tower was built in 1908 and became fully automated in 1980.

The lighthouse is not accessible to the public. You can still see it from the mainland, where the bridge, island and rugged coastline form the main focus of a visit.

Walking the Pencaer coast

Paths around Strumble Head join the wider coastal walking routes of the Pencaer Peninsula. One circular route begins at a small gravel car park, crosses open countryside and then follows the coast between Pen Globo and Porthsychan Bay. The trail continues along cliffs and headlands, with views of the lighthouse and the rocky shore.

The route has steep ascents and descents, so allow for a demanding walk. Along the way, look out to sea for seals and dolphins. Seals can also be seen around the coves near the lighthouse, while the rocks and coast are good places to watch for gannets and other marine life.
