Yavuz Sultan Selim Mosque

Yavuz Sultan Selim Mosque stands on a hill in Fatih, overlooking the Golden Horn.

Yavuz Sultan Selim Mosque stands on a hill in Fatih, overlooking the Golden Horn. Completed in 1522 in memory of Sultan Selim I, it is an early example of Ottoman architecture, with a spacious courtyard and a high-domed prayer hall decorated with calligraphy and floral motifs. The hilltop setting is a reason to visit in its own right: the grounds open onto wide views across the water and old Istanbul. Take time to look around the courtyard, then enter the mosque respectfully if it is open to visitors.

Completed in 1522, Yavuz Sultan Selim Mosque was built by Sultan Suleiman the Magnificent in memory of his father, Sultan Selim I. It stands on one of Istanbul’s hills above the Golden Horn and is an early example of Ottoman mosque architecture.

The mosque is part of a larger complex that includes the tombs of Sultan Selim and Hafsa Sultan, as well as tombs of princes, a school and an imaret. A separate nearby complex includes a madrasa and a fountain. These buildings place the mosque within a wider group of religious and charitable institutions.

The courtyard is a calm place to pause and look out over the Golden Horn and the surrounding neighbourhoods. The mosque’s position also brings views across old Istanbul; from the grounds, the Çukurbostan Park can be seen.

Inside, a high dome covers the prayer hall. Calligraphy and floral decoration draw the eye across the interior, while the spacious layout gives the room an open feel. Visitors should dress modestly when entering, as a courtesy to those who come to pray and study.

Getting there and exploring nearby

The T5 tram runs to Fener station, from where the mosque is reached by a short uphill walk. Buses from Eminönü and nearby districts are another option. The hilltop location is part of the appeal, but the climb is worth factoring into your route.

On Wednesdays, a nearby street market sells goods including fresh produce and textiles. The surrounding historic neighbourhoods also make a natural continuation of a visit: routes downhill lead towards some of Istanbul’s older settlements and shops, with Karaköy and Eminönü further afield.
