Atik Valide Mosque is in Üsküdar, on Istanbul’s Asian side, and was built in 1583 for Nurbanu Sultan. Designed by Mimar Sinan, it is one of his major mosque complexes and is known as his final masterpiece. Look for the central dome and twin minarets, then explore the courtyards and the surviving parts of the wider külliye, which included a school, hospital and soup kitchen. The tree-shaded courtyard is a quiet place to pause, with tea available in the yard.

A mosque built for Nurbanu Sultan

Atik Valide Mosque was built in Üsküdar in 1583 for Nurbanu Sultan, the mother of Sultan Murad III. Its architect was Mimar Sinan, whose work shaped many of Istanbul’s best-known Ottoman buildings. The mosque is considered his final masterpiece.

The central dome and two minarets mark the complex on the Üsküdar skyline. Its design follows a plan similar to another of Sinan’s major mosque complexes in Istanbul, though the buildings and setting here have their own scale and character.

The wider külliye

The mosque was part of an extensive külliye, a group of buildings serving religious, educational and social needs. Its institutions included a medrese, or school for higher Islamic studies, an imaret, or soup kitchen, a darüşşifa, or hospital, and a han, or caravanserai. A hamam associated with the complex is now decommissioned.

Some of these buildings have been undergoing restoration. Explore the area around the mosque as well as its prayer space to understand how much larger the complex was than the mosque alone.

Courtyards and a quiet pause

Courtyards are part of the experience of visiting Atik Valide. The grounds include a garden and classrooms, while mature plane trees provide shade in the yard. Tea is available there, offering a chance to sit between exploring the mosque and its surroundings.

The mosque’s interior has patterned decoration and vivid colours. Visit early in the day if you want a calmer setting for looking around. Dress respectfully, as you would at other places of worship.
