Nong Prajak Park is a large public park in the centre of Udon Thani, built around a lake with several islands joined by bridges. Walking and cycling paths run around the water, and the park has free exercise machines, jogging tracks and a children's play area with swings. Locals come here to exercise, picnic and feed the fish, and in the late afternoon many gather at the lakeside to watch the sunset. Cafes and food stalls are close by, so a drink or a meal before or after your walk is easy.

From a salty pond to a city park

A large pond already lay west of the town centre before Udon Thani was founded. It was first called Nong Na Kluea, which means pond of salty water.

Later the name changed to Nong Prachak, in honour of Prince Prajak Sinlapakhom, the founder of Udon Thani town. The park is still known by his name today.

The lake and its islands

If you walk behind the Udon Thani City Museum, you reach the edge of the lake. The lake and the islands within it make up the park. Footpaths from the east, south and west entrances lead onto peninsulas that reach out into the water, and bridges link the islands.

Two suspension footbridges sway slightly as you cross them. Along the shore you will find lotus flowers, and waterbirds sometimes glide across the surface. Fish, turtles and frogs live in the water. If you like, bring bread to feed the fish and ducks.

Paths, exercise and the cycling lane

Wide walking and jogging tracks circle the lake, and the cycling lane is kept separate from the walkers. The loop is a little over 3 km and carries a speed limit of 20 km/h for cyclists.

An exercise area has free machines, and keep-fit groups meet on the grass. In the evening, an aerobics group often gathers on the shore. You can hire bicycles or paddle boats on the lake if you prefer to see the water from a different angle.

Ducks, benches and the lakeside

The park's best-known feature is its giant yellow ducks, which sit in one corner of the lake. They are the city's mascots and are often decorated for holidays. Visitors photograph them, and children enjoy them too.

Benches, pavilions and playgrounds are spread around the park, and there is shade under the trees. Many people sit on the grass by the water in the late afternoon. Chao Phu-Ya Chinese Temple is just outside the park, and massage shops and food stalls are close by.
