Wat Chana Songkhram stands on Chakrabongse Road, opposite the Khao San Road area. The temple’s earlier name was Wat Klang Na, meaning “temple in the middle of the rice field,” a reference to the landscape when it was established, before Bangkok became the capital.

The site was later designated a royal temple by King Rama I and renovated during his reign. Its name commemorates Siamese victories over Burmese forces in the late 18th century. The temple also has ties to Mon soldiers and monks, many of whom made it their spiritual home. During King Rama V’s reign, ash containers were built for royal family members whose remains were moved there from the rear palace.

The ordination hall, or ubosot, has a three-tiered roof with gold detailing. Inside, murals depict scenes from the Buddha’s life, alongside decorated religious displays that include jade elements and golden ornaments.

A prominent Buddha image shows the Buddha in the Mara-subduing posture, associated with his triumph over fear and temptation. The temple’s religious art and active use as a place of prayer give the grounds a different pace from the nearby tourist street.
