MR Kukrit Pramoj House

MR Kukrit Pramoj House is a house museum in Sathon, Bangkok, set among modern apartment buildings.

MR Kukrit Pramoj House is a house museum in Sathon, Bangkok, set among modern apartment buildings. The former home of author and statesman Kukrit Pramoj brings together traditional Thai wooden houses, raised above the ground, and a garden with ponds, lotus flowers and tropical plants. Walk among the separate buildings, which include rooms used as a bedroom, library, reception room, prayer room and exhibition space. Caretakers can share stories about the property, and brochures provide information for a self-guided visit.

A home built from traditional Thai houses

Author and statesman Mom Ratchawong Kukrit Pramoj, who lived from 1911 to 1995, once owned this Sathon complex. Its traditional wooden buildings were brought from other parts of the city and country, then renovated as part of the home. Their raised floors and separate forms give the property a different scale from the large modern apartment block nearby.

Five houses on the upper level served distinct purposes: bedroom, library, reception room, prayer room and exhibition space. A large pavilion stands near the front of the property. The layout connects domestic life with the rooms used for receiving people, reading and prayer.

The garden and grounds

Ponds, lotus flowers and tropical plants fill the garden around the houses. The grounds also include a lawn at the rear. Bird calls and other animal sounds carry through the property, giving the garden a quieter feel than the surrounding built-up area.

Caretakers can answer questions and share stories about the house and the neighbourhood. Brochures are available for visitors who prefer to explore without a guide. The grounds are best approached on foot, so comfortable shoes help, and mosquito repellent is useful when spending time in the garden.
