Black Devil Cave is a coastal site in Liuqiu Township, Pingtung County, where the sea has broken the rock into huge boulders. The route follows the shore through caves, with narrow, low passages in places and lookout decks above the water. The main devil cave draws the biggest crowds, but the quieter caves and paths nearby are often the better choice. From the viewing platforms you may see wild sea turtles swimming offshore. The name and the local story
The cave's name comes from a story told on the island. The account holds that the cave once sheltered Westerners living there when the island was taken over. They were pushed out and boycotted, and they came to be called the black ghosts. The cave was named after them.
The site is in the Liuqiu Township area of Pingtung County, and its rock has been shaped by the sea. Some of the old paths have been left in place beside the newer routes that replaced them.
The route through the caves
The caves are connected by paths along the coast. Some are narrow and low, so you will need to duck and watch your head. Parts of the cave are dark, so a torch is useful. Expect some mosquitoes inside, especially on the way through the darker sections.
The main devil cave is the busiest point, and the queue there can be long. The other caves in the area are usually quieter and easier to move through. Plan to spend time on the coastal paths as well as inside the caves.
Near the exit there is a small gallery of wood sculptures and a few food stands. A larger restaurant and more food stands sit outside the site. Toilets are available.
Viewing platforms and the upper area
The upper part of the site has good views of the beach and the sea. It is a good place to rest and take photographs.
The viewing platforms are the main draw for many visitors. From them, you can watch wild sea turtles swimming in the water below. Bring a camera or a zoom lens if you want photos of them.
Nearby there is a temple and a wood craft museum, which some visitors find worth a stop on the same trip.
Planning the visit
Tickets are sold for the paid attractions on Liuqiu, and buying them in advance is recommended. The site has a wheelchair accessible entrance and a wheelchair accessible parking lot. It is listed as good for kids, though the low passages call for care with young children.
Arrive early. On a busy Saturday, the central cave was already full of tour groups by mid-morning. The site closes in the late afternoon, so plan your day so that you finish before then.
