Liseberg

Liseberg is the largest amusement park in Scandinavia, on Örgrytevägen in central Gothenburg.

Liseberg is the largest amusement park in Scandinavia, on Örgrytevägen in central Gothenburg. It opened in 1923 and welcomes more than three million visitors a year. The rides range from the wooden roller coaster Balder and the free-fall tower AtmosFear to carousels and areas for small children. Flower beds, concerts and shows fill the grounds between the rides. The park runs in three seasons: summer, Halloween and Christmas. The Christmas season adds one of the largest and oldest Christmas markets in Sweden. Allow a few hours at minimum, or a full day if you want to cover the rides, a show and a meal.

From 1923 to the centenary

Liseberg

Liseberg opened in 1923, the year Gothenburg marked its 300th anniversary. The city gave the park to its citizens as part of that celebration. In 2023 the park marked 100 years.

It stands close to the centre, in the Heden district near Korsvägen, and has two entrances, one on Örgrytevägen and one on Getebergsled. The grounds are known for their flower beds and trees, and the rides sit among well-kept green spaces. The park draws more than three million visitors a year and is among the most visited attractions in Sweden.

The park runs on wind power, and one of its rides feeds electricity back into the Gothenburg grid.

The rides

Balder is the best-known ride. It is a roller coaster built entirely of wood, with a highest point of 36 metres and a steepest drop of 70 degrees. An international poll has twice named it the best wooden-track coaster.

Helix is the longest and fastest roller coaster in Scandinavia. AtmosFear is the tallest free-fall ride in Europe, dropping riders 116 metres in about three seconds. Valkyria, added in 2017, is a dive coaster with a vertical drop of 50 metres. Mechanica spins riders through a full 360 degrees high above the ground. Loke, also from 2017, is a rotating gondola.

The Liseberg Wheel is the calmer choice. Each capsule holds up to eight people, and the wheel climbs to about 60 metres, with views over Gothenburg. The park also has carousels, bumper cars, teacups and boat rides.

For those who prefer not to pay for the big rides, locals play the femkamp, a five-event contest among friends held inside the park.

For younger children

Kaninlandet, the rabbit land, and Luna Park are the two large areas for the youngest visitors. The green Liseberg rabbits are the park's mascots, and they appear in shows in Kaninlandet. The park also has playgrounds and gentler rides for small children.

Halloween and Christmas

In autumn the park turns to Halloween, with up to five haunted houses. The Christmas season follows in mid-November. In 2025 it ran from 15 November to 30 December, with the park lit in Kaninlandet, Tomtebyn and the other themed areas.

The Christmas market began in 2000 and draws around 450,000 to 500,000 visitors. About 80 small timbered stalls sell arts and crafts and seasonal food, including marinated herring, marzipan pigs and glögg, the Swedish mulled wine. Roasted reindeer is served by Sámi reindeer herders from Lapland. A Christmas lights show was added in 2020, and part of the market is indoors for rainy days. The season also has ice-skating and seasonal shows, including an ice ballet.

Eating at the park

Food ranges from waffles to seafood and Tex Mex. In the Christmas season, Stjärnornas Krog serves a julbord, the Swedish Christmas buffet. The spread includes julskinka (Christmas ham), gravad lax (cured salmon), sill (pickled herring), lussekatter (saffron buns) and risgrynsgröt (rice pudding). Book well ahead, since it fills quickly.

In summer, concerts on the main stage bring international artists to the park.
