Museo del Teatro de Caesaraugusta

The Museo del Teatro de Caesaraugusta in Zaragoza brings you close to the remains of a Roman theatre built in the 1st century AD. The site is presented alongside archaeological finds and models that help explain the building and life in ancient Caesaraugusta. Displays in English and a film on the theatre’s history and excavation add context to the visit. It is also one of four archaeological museums on the Ruta Caesaraugusta, alongside the Forum, Public Baths and River Port.

The theatre and its archaeological remains

The museum is built around the remains of Caesaraugusta’s Roman theatre. Dating to the 1st century AD, the theatre is one of the city’s major archaeological sites. Its ruins are presented in a way that lets you get close to the structure and understand the scale of the former performance space.

Archaeological finds and models add detail to the visit, with exhibits covering Roman theatre and life in Caesaraugusta. The displays explain how the theatre was constructed and what has been uncovered at the site.

Film and the Ruta Caesaraugusta

A film covers the theatre’s excavation and the history of Zaragoza. It provides a useful thread through the exhibits, so leave time to watch it as part of your visit. Much of the written information is available in English.

The theatre museum is one of four sites on the Ruta Caesaraugusta. The others are the Forum, the Public Baths and the River Port. Visiting more than one gives you a wider look at the Roman city through its public spaces and infrastructure.
