Parque de la Puerta de Tierra

Parque de la Puerta de Tierra is a small historic garden beside Plaza Juan González de la Torre in Garachico, Tenerife.

Parque de la Puerta de Tierra is a small historic garden beside Plaza Juan González de la Torre in Garachico, Tenerife. Its stone gateway once marked the entrance to the town’s 16th-century harbor, before the 1706 volcanic eruption reshaped the coast and the harbor disappeared. Inside the leafy grounds, look for an old wine press from Hacienda de San Juan Degollado, a monument to Garachico’s founder Cristóbal de Ponte and a bust of poet Rafael Alberti. It is a quiet place to pause among tropical plants and palms.

The stone Puerta de Tierra was the entrance to Garachico’s 16th-century harbor. The gateway once stood by the water, at the point where goods entered and left the port. It formed part of a larger fortification that extended to the castle.

The harbor was central to Garachico’s period as the island’s largest commercial port. The 1706 volcanic eruption changed the coastline and destroyed the harbor. The gateway remains in the town, now set inland in the park beside Plaza Juan González de la Torre.

The park preserves an old wine press, or lagar, brought from Hacienda de San Juan Degollado. Its size makes it easy to spot among the greenery, and it recalls the wine trade associated with Garachico’s past.

Look for the monument to Cristóbal de Ponte, the town’s founder, and a bust of poet and playwright Rafael Alberti. Alberti visited Garachico in 1991. Together with the gateway and wine press, these landmarks make the small garden a compact place to encounter several strands of the town’s history.

A garden pause in the old town

The grounds are planted with tropical and exotic species, including large palms. Paths run between the greenery and historic features, with places to pause in the shade. The park’s calm setting offers a change of pace from walking around Garachico’s streets.

Allow time to look at the landmarks and their information rather than treating the park as only a shortcut. The paths include volcanic-stone steps and surfaces, so comfortable footwear is useful. There are no facilities inside for buying refreshments.
