Iglesia de San Agustín stands beside Plaza de la Constitución in La Orotava, its elevated position making it visible from much of the town. Built by the Augustinian Order between 1671 and 1694, the church combines a stone Baroque-style portal with a Mudejar coffered ceiling and carved wooden altars. Inside, look for the 17th-century statue of Nuestra Señora de Gracia. The former convent next door is now the San Agustín Culture House. Check access before setting out, as visiting hours are limited.
Built beside the former San Roque chapel

The Augustinians began building the church and its adjoining convent in the late 17th century on the hill where the San Roque Chapel had stood. Construction took place between 1671 and 1694. The church served as a monastery church for the Abbey of Nuestra Señora de Gracia.
Its position and high perimeter walls give the building a strong presence in La Orotava. The church can be seen from many parts of town, and its façade faces Plaza de la Constitución. The former convent stands beside it; after the Spanish Confiscation, the building was used as a military barracks, and its cloister was badly damaged. It later became the San Agustín Culture House.
Look closely at the façade and interior

The central portal is made of stone and has two levels, with a predominantly Baroque design. Corinthian capitals and palm-leaf decoration mark the entrance. The bell tower is built from black lava rock.
Inside, the Mudejar-style coffered ceiling is one of the details to look for. The church also has carved wooden altars and the 17th-century Madonna statue Nuestra Señora de Gracia, located in the choir. Restoration work has returned part of the church’s former appearance after serious structural damage and the loss of many artworks and altarpieces in the 19th century.
Tours and the former convent
A guided tour can give you access to the church’s religious collection, which includes statues, religious clothing, and silver and gold objects. Tours have been described as available in Spanish or English; check what is running when you plan your visit.
The adjoining former convent is now the San Agustín Culture House. Its three-storey millstone façade is described as the building’s only original element, and it ends in a Baroque-style bell tower. The church and convent make a useful stop together while exploring the historic centre.
