At the entrance to Ciutadella’s harbour, Castell de Sant Nicolau is a compact octagonal defence tower with broad views over the port, coastline and open sea. Climb its spiral stone stairs to the battlements, where you can watch boats come and go or catch the sunset. Information boards on the ground floor explain the tower’s history, and the harbour-side setting makes it easy to include in a walk along Passeig Marítim. Entry is free, though opening access can vary.

Castell de Sant Nicolau

Castell de Sant Nicolau stands beside the mouth of Ciutadella’s natural port. The octagonal tower was built as part of the town’s coastal defences, after the medieval walls were reinforced. Its position allowed it to protect the harbour entrance, where boats pass between the port and the open sea. The tower is associated with Menorca’s history of seaborne attacks and defence. The French landing in 1756, followed by the siege of Fort San Felipe, helps explain the importance of fortifications around the island’s ports. Sant Nicolau was one of two defence towers along the Ciutadella coast; the other is Castell de Sa Caleta.

Information boards on the ground floor introduce the castle’s history. From there, a narrow spiral staircase leads up to the battlements. The climb is short, with about 35 steps, but the stone stairs are narrow, so take care as you go up and down. From the top, you can look over the port, the coastline and the sea. The view reaches toward the ferry terminal, and boats entering or leaving Ciutadella make the harbour setting especially clear. The tower has also hosted occasional art exhibitions.

A stop on the harbour walk

Passeig Marítim leads along the waterfront toward the castle. The route beside the harbour is flat and suitable for a relaxed walk, with boats and the port entrance along the way. After visiting the tower, continue toward the water’s edge or follow the promenade back toward town. Late afternoon brings the chance to see the sun set over the sea. The light falls across the harbour and the tower’s stone, and there is space nearby to pause and watch the view. Check whether the tower is open before planning to go inside; even when access is unavailable, you can still see it from outside.
