Cathedral Church of the Armed Forces

The Cathedral Church of the Armed Forces is a Baroque church on Calle del Sacramento in central Madrid, near the Royal Palace.

The Cathedral Church of the Armed Forces is a Baroque church on Calle del Sacramento in central Madrid, near the Royal Palace. Built for the Bernardas del Santísimo Sacramento convent, it later became the seat of the Military Vicariate. Inside, look for the marble decoration and detailed frescoes; the church brings together Catholic worship and Spain’s military chaplaincy. It is a quiet stop for architecture and art, though access can be affected by services or ceremonies. Entry is free.

From convent church to military cathedral

The church was built for the Bernardas del Santísimo Sacramento convent. The Duke of Uceda, a powerful minister under Philip III, ordered its construction. In 1616, the first nuns arrived from the Santa Ana monastery in Valladolid.

After the duke fell from favour, the church was neglected. The Archbishopric of Madrid later transferred it to the 1st Military Region, and it became the seat of the Military Vicariate. Its present identity connects a former convent church with the spiritual life of Spain’s Armed Forces.

Baroque details inside

The church’s Baroque character comes through in its marble interior, decorative elements and detailed frescoes. Take time to look across the surfaces and study the painted work rather than viewing the space only from the entrance. The church is also valued as a place for quiet contemplation.

Access is not always the same as a museum visit. A service or ceremony may be taking place, and one account describes being unable to take photographs during Mass. Respect worship in progress and follow any instructions on site.
