Los Hervideros

Los Hervideros is a stretch of volcanic coastline in Yaiza, on Lanzarote’s southwest coast.

Los Hervideros is a stretch of volcanic coastline in Yaiza, on Lanzarote’s southwest coast. Lava that reached the Atlantic formed cliffs, caves and tunnels; when waves surge into the cavities, spray and foam make the water seem to boil. A short path leads from the car park to several viewing points above the coast. The black rock and shifting surf are especially striking when the sea is rough, and the coastline also makes a rewarding stop at sunset. Entry is free.

How the caves formed

Los Hervideros means “the boiling places,” a name tied to the sight of seawater churning through the coastal cavities. Lava from eruptions in the early eighteenth century reached the Atlantic and solidified. The resulting rock formations have since been shaped by the sea, which wore openings, caves and tunnels into the coastline.

The site lies on Lanzarote’s southwest coast, in the municipality of Yaiza and close to Timanfaya National Park. Its geology is visible from the walking route: dark lava rock meets the open Atlantic, with the formations continuing below the waterline.

What to look for along the path

A short, simple path runs above the cliffs and connects several stone viewing balconies. From these points, you can watch waves enter the caves and push spray back out through openings in the rock. The effect is most dramatic when the sea is rough, when the water can foam and surge against the cliffs. In calmer conditions, the rock shapes and coastal views remain the focus.

The viewing points provide access close to the coastline, but the cliffs and uneven ground call for care. Follow the paths and keep children within reach, particularly near exposed edges. Sturdy footwear is useful for walking over irregular surfaces.

Planning a coastal stop

High tide is a useful time to visit if you want to see the waves reach into the caves with greater force. Late afternoon brings the possibility of sunset light across the rugged coast. Conditions at sea change the show, so the force of the waves may be less apparent when the water is calm.

Los Hervideros fits naturally into a drive along this part of Lanzarote. El Golfo and the Salinas de Janubio are nearby, and the route can be combined with a visit to Timanfaya. The site has free admission and a car park is noted for the area. Take care in rough sea conditions and observe the coast from the designated viewpoints.
