Castell de Miravet is a castle above the village of Miravet, on a hill over the Ebro in Tarragona province. Much of it is now ruins, but the surviving walls still show how the Knights Templar fortified the site. The views over the valley and the river are the main reason to come. Climb the spiral staircase to the roof for the widest outlook. Inside, a virtual reality room and a 3D graphic presentation explain the castle's history. Plan about an hour for the castle, and leave time for the village below.
Origins and the Templars

The castle began as a fortress of Andalusi origin, built in the Muslim period to protect lands taken during the conquest of Spain. Count Ramon Berenguer IV retook the site and gave it to the Knights Templar, who enlarged it.
The result is considered one of the best examples of Templar architecture in the region. One account dates the first Templar work here to the 11th century, when the castle was built to protect the land. It is the first Templar castle in Tarragona.
What is inside

Most of the interior is bare stone, so the castle is best understood through its walls and layout rather than through furnishings. The building is in remarkable condition, which makes it easier to see how the fortress was used.
The spiral staircase leads to the roof, where the widest views are. A virtual reality room and a 3D graphic presentation cover the castle's history and explain the fortress in more detail.
Getting up to the castle
Driving is the easiest way to reach the castle. A free car park sits next to the entrance, and there is plenty of parking near the entrance area.
A dirt path also runs from the village to the castle. It is steep and has many steps, so it suits walkers who are comfortable with a climb. The entrance is wheelchair accessible, but the upper levels involve climbing.
The village and the river
Below the castle, the medieval village of Miravet runs down the cliff toward the Ebro. The old town has pottery shops worth a browse before or after the castle.
A ferry that carries cars crosses the river here, and reaching the village by it is part of the experience. The area suits cycling, kayaking and slow boat trips on the river.
