San Telmo Park

San Telmo Park is a central square in Las Palmas de Gran Canaria, between the Triana and Arenales districts.

San Telmo Park is a central square in Las Palmas de Gran Canaria, between the Triana and Arenales districts. Once an old city dock reclaimed from the sea, it now has palm-lined gardens, a children’s play area and the small Iglesia de San Telmo. Look for the Art Nouveau kiosk, or pause at the open-air café and watch local life around the square. The park is also a transport hub, with a bus station beside it, so it works well as a stop while exploring central Las Palmas.

From old dock to central square

San Telmo Park occupies a large square in the historic Triana district. The site was once a city dock; the central esplanade was later reclaimed from the sea. Small gardens with palms and vegetation native to the Canary Islands soften the open space.

The park also has a place in the city’s history as the location of Las Palmas’s northern wall, which remained until the 19th century. Remains of the city’s fortifications can still be seen at Castillo de Mata.

The kiosk and chapel

The Art Nouveau kiosk is one of the park’s distinctive landmarks. Nearby, Iglesia de San Telmo stands on the southwestern side of the park. It was among the first religious buildings in the city, and its modest exterior gives little indication of the details inside.

The park’s layout brings together the church, gardens and open square, with the bus station beside it. This mix of everyday transport and places to pause makes the park a useful point from which to explore Triana on foot.
