Poblado de la Atalayita is an archaeological site in the Pozo Negro valley of Fuerteventura, set among volcanic lava. The settlement preserves dwellings built into lava caves and structures edged with dry-stone walls, linked to the island’s pre-Hispanic Mahos people. Start at the visitor center for displays in English and Spanish, then walk through the remains. A small rise behind the site gives a wider view of its scale. Access is by an unpaved track from a minor road on Fuerteventura’s southern coast.
Homes in the lava
The settlement’s remains include houses built into caves in the lava and structures surrounded by dry-stone walls. Their position within the volcanic flow gives the site its distinctive layout, with buildings set into and around the rugged terrain.
The settlement is associated with the Mahos, the island’s pre-Hispanic people. Walking among the structures offers a closer look at how homes were fitted into this landscape.
Understanding the site
The visitor center has displays in English and Spanish about Fuerteventura’s history and the settlement. Guided explanations are available when staff are on site. From a small hill behind the remains, you can see more of the settlement’s extent than from the paths among the buildings.
