Las Playas is a coastal stretch on eastern El Hierro, in Spain’s Canary Islands, where black volcanic sand and small pebbles sit beneath steep cliffs. The beaches form a broad curve with little development and few crowds. Look out to Roque de la Bonanza, a rock rising from the sea, or explore the shore by car. Swimming and snorkeling are possible, but strong waves, sea urchins and crabs call for care in the water.

A coastline shaped by landslides

Las Playas Natural Monument runs along El Hierro’s eastern coast. Several large landslides shaped the area, leaving a semicircular stretch of beaches backed by cliffs. The shore extends for about nine kilometres, with black volcanic sand and small pebbles along the way.

There are few buildings along this coast, and the beaches are often quiet. Car access makes it possible to explore different parts of the shoreline rather than treating it as one single beach stop.

Roque de la Bonanza and the cliffs

One of the coast’s most recognisable sights is Roque de la Bonanza, a rock that rises about 200 metres from the sea. The cliffs give the shoreline a dramatic profile, and the view from El Mirador de Isora looks down over Las Playas.

The coast is used for swimming, snorkeling and diving, but conditions in the water need attention. Strong waves, sea urchins and crabs can make swimming closer to shore hazardous. Check the sea before entering and choose your spot with care.
